José Humberto Mateos Gomez, MD

Dr. Mateos has dedicated his life to teaching, and has been a principle force in elevating the quality of neurosurgical training in Mexico. He earned his MD in 1951, and completed postgraduate training in 1957, benefiting from rotations in hospitals in the United States and abroad.

Dr. Mateos founded the Neurosurgery Service of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in 1963. Throughout his career he has been involved in the activities of the Mexican Society of Neurological Surgery where he served as president, and the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery.

In addition to officer positions in many neurosurgical societies in Mexico, he is an Academic member of The Mexican Academy of Medicine and Mexican Academy of Surgery in Mexico. Dr Mateos was also a founding member and president of Mexican Board of Neurosurgery.

He served as Head of the Neurosurgical Service in the National Medical Center from 1979 to 1990 and as a neurosurgeon at the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery from 1991 to 2008. He served as editor of the Journal Archives of Neurosurgery for that same Institute.

Dr.Mateos is also the editor of the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Dr. Manuel Velaso Suarez Magazine, which is also the Magazine of the Mexican Society of Neurological Surgery. He is a Professor in the National University Autonomous of Mexico (UNAM). He has over 260 papers on different subjects related to the neurosciences to his publishing credit.

In addition to over a decade of service to the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) and the Latin American Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (FLANC), Dr. Mateos has also been a great humanist.

Dr. Mateos has been a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons since 1981—27 years. While he is already a lifetime member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the AANS chose him to receive a special honor for his lifetime of service to neurosurgery in Mexico.
