Fellowship Length: The suggested length of the fellowship and financial support is one to three months. The AANS provides a monthly stipend only up to three months.

Required Materials:
  1. Applicants must locate and identify a neurosurgeon and program to sponsor their applications at a "visiting surgeons" Neurosurgical Program in North America. Sponsorship means that a neurosurgeon in North America will supervise and mentor the applicant for the length of the fellowship (up to three months). Sponsoring programs are under no obligation to offer financial support. The letter from the sponsoring surgeon must specify that he/she will host and sponsor the applicant if the applicant is awarded the fellowship, and strongly support the applicant's education plan.

  3. The applicant will submit an education plan which may include both clinical and research goals. Sponsoring surgeons (mentors) should support the education plan and specify details in their letters of acceptance/reference.
  4. Each applicant must submit documentation of education, such as diplomas and certificates. Certified English translations must be provided.
  5. Each applicant must submit their curriculum vitae
  6. Applicants must submit a letter of reference from their training program director, or, if the applicants are out of training for 5 years or more, a letter from their senior neurosurgeons.
  7. Applicants must submit a letter of reference from either an AANS member, or an officer of their local or regional neurosurgical organizations. Letters from such an officer must be on the letterhead of the local organization, or list the officer’s title/role in the organization.

Criteria: Applications will be judged on the following criteria:
  1. Specificity and feasibility of educational goals
  2. Scientific merit, completeness and clarity of the educational plan
  3. Likelihood the recipient(s) will contribute substantially to neurosurgery in their home country following the fellowship

Selection: The AANS International Outreach Committee will review and rank the applications. Each application will be reviewed by three committee members. The top-ranked applications will be forwarded to the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee consists of:
  • the AANS International Outreach Committee (IOC) Chair
  • two International Outreach Committee members appointed by the chair
  • one Foundation for International Education in Neurological Surgery (FIENS) representative nominated by the FIENS board (must also be an AANS member)
