International Visiting Surgeons Program

Below is an alphabetical listing of programs which will consider accepting international visiting surgeons for educational/observational experiences. This information has been provided by the AANS International Outreach Committee.

This listing is informational only. All arrangements must be made directly with the host institution, which determines the length, structure and content of their programs.

The Albany Medical Center Neurosciences Institute accepts international visiting neurosurgeons each year. Typically, visiting neurosurgeons have stayed from 3 months to 12 months. There is no internal funding available but we encourage the applicant to apply for international fellowship stipends awarded by the AANS with one of our faculty serving as a mentor. The visiting international neurosurgeon will experience a robust clinical and basic science research environment. Previously the international visiting neurosurgeons have been clinical observers in the subspecialty areas of spine, cerebrovascular, neuroendovascular, and skull base neurosurgery. In addition to clinical observation, basic science research in the areas of cerebrovascular, neuroendovascular and tumor biology is available to the visiting neurosurgeon. Animal faciliatise and a 3 Tesla research MRI Center with functional MRI capabilities are available. Clinical rsearch in neuroendovascular surgery and neurointensive care medicine in addition to anatomical dissections in our skull base microsurgery laboratory are encouraged.

No Internal Funding. Program Specifics: The program for international visiting neurosurgeons is for two visitors at a time, with a minimum training period of three months and a maximum of one year. Visiting neurosurgeons can participate in basic science research and clinical trials under the supervision of Dr. Robert Biscup and Dr. Robert Isaacs. Visitors can also participate in observership programs on the clinical services with particular interest in spine disorders. Opportunities for research in spine biomechanics can also be explored. The Spine Institute visiting surgeon program also emphasizes Falied Back surgery program, multidisciplinary treatment approach, minimally invasive spine surgery, adult reconstruction and deformity, cervical spine tumors and revision spine surgery. This program will combine the strengths of two outstanding training programs in spine surgical techniques and research. In addition, visitor will be able to participate in weekly conferences, grand rounds, and spine symposiums. Scientific publication thereof is encouraged. Currently no internal funding available.

Geisinger Health System is the largest group practice in Pennsylvania. The fellowship period varies according to the goal of the applicant and the subject interested in pursuing. The position allows the fellow to observe surgery, attend conferences, be involved in clinical, anatomical, and basic lab research; however, it does not allow participation in patient care unless he is licensed by the Arkansas State Medical Board. A variety of areas of expertise include skull base surgery, microneurosurgery, cerebrovascular, spine and pediatric neurosurgery.
