Membership Requirements & Applications

AANS offers several categories of membership to neurosurgeons, residents, fellows and allied health professionals.

Categories

Active: For neurosurgeons certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, or Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery and residing in the United States, Canada or Republic of Mexico.

Dues and Journal of Neurosurgery Subscription Rates
Active and Active Provisional (includes mandatory JNS)
United States $830
Canada/Mexico $465
Military $500

Active (Provisional): For the neurological surgeon who has completed a training program approved by the ACGME, the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, or the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery within the last five (5) years, and has not yet met the certification requirements of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, or the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery.

International: For neurological surgeons who do not qualify as an Active Member by virtue of their country of residence or training and who have completed a formal neurosurgical training program as determined by, and suitable to, the Board of Directors. Individuals applying for International Membership must reside outside of the US or Canada at the time of application.

Honorary: For those who are recognized internationally for their outstanding education, research, or clinical contributions to neurologic science. The Honorary Member must be proposed by voting members in good standing and approved by the Board of Directors and the voting membership.

Resident: For residents who are enrolled in at least a PGY-2 level neurosurgical training program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Neurosurgery) of Canada, or the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery, A.C. Residents are made automatic members upon receipt of the list of residents from the ABNS. Benefits of Resident membership include no dues and beginning in 2005 - free AANS Annual Meeting registration and free subscription to Journal of Neurosurgery.

Fellow: For neurosurgeons who are enrolled in a neurosurgical fellowship training program immediately following the completion of their neurosurgical residency training. Please contact our office to obtain a New Fellow Member Application form, which is to be completed and returned to our office for processing. Benefits of Fellow membership include no dues and beginning in 2005 - free AANS Annual Meeting registration and free subscription to Journal of Neurosurgery

International Resident/Fellow: International Resident/Fellow Members shall be residents or fellows who are enrolled in a verifiable non-North American neurosurgical training program or who are in the five years following completion of residency. Once certification is obtained, the International Resident/Fellow Member may request transfer to International Member status with the submission of a copy of their certification certificate.

Associate: For non-neurosurgeons who have shown distinction in related medical disciplines, neuroscience nurses or physician assistants.

Allied: Allied Members shall be individuals who are Certified Surgical Technologists and are certified by the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist with advanced certification in neurological surgery.
Or
Individuals who are not neurological surgeons but who benefit the practice of neurosurgery by their administrative contributions to the practice of neurosurgery.

Non-Member Journal of Neurosurgery Subscription Form

Lifetime: For Active, Active Provisional, and International members who are fully retired from operative neurosurgery, disabled, or who have been an AANS member for 30 years or more and Associate and Allied members who are fully retired, disabled, or who have been an AANS member for 30 years or more.
