On June 3, the AANS, the CNS, the AANS/CNS Section on Neurotrauma & Critical Care and the AANS/CNS Section on Pediatric Neurological Surgery joined more than 430 organizations on a letter to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees urging the inclusion of increased funding for public health research into firearm morbidity and mortality prevention. Specifically, the letter requested $35 million for the CDC, $25 million for the NIH and $1 million for the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) to conduct this crucial funding. Congress provided $12.5 million for the CDC and $12.5 million for NIH in FY 2024 and the letter hoped to encourage the Appropriations Committees to sustain and build on this funding for FY 2025. Unfortunately, the House Appropriations Committee did not provide any FY 2025 funding.
