On June 17, the AANS and the CNS sent letters were sent to both the House and Senate Appropriations Committees urging the members to provide a significant increase in FY 2025 funding for The Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies® (BRAIN) Initiative. The FY 2024 appropriations legislation slashed the funding for the BRAIN Initiative by 41 percent, from $680 million in FY 2023 to $402 million in FY 2024. This amount represents a massive blow to dedicated neurosurgeons.
While the House Appropriations Committee approved report acknowledges that the “BRAIN initiative is an ambitious program to develop and apply new tools and technologies to answer fundamental questions about the brain and ultimately to inspire new treatments for brain diseases,” it does not provide a specific FY 2025 funding amount within the proposed new National Institute on Neuroscience and Brain Research.
