Neurosurgery Supports Legislation Funding Additional GME Slots

  • Graduate Medical Education

Subject: S. 834, the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act

Dear Senators Menendez, Boozman and Schumer:

On behalf of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the Congress of
Neurological Surgeons (CNS), representing more than 4,000 practicing neurosurgeons in the
United States, we write to support your legislation, S. 834, the Resident Physician Shortage
Reduction Act.

We are pleased that your legislation would provide 14,000 crucial new Medicare graduate medical
education (GME) slots over seven years, building on the GME provisions included in the
Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021 (P.L. 116-260), which provided funding for 1,000 Medicaresupported GME positions. Despite increased enrollment and the establishment of additional
medical and osteopathic schools, the Consolidated Appropriations Act marked the first time since
1996 that Medicare-funded medical resident positions increased.
